No End to Ireland’s Horse Crisis

The past 12 months have been without a doubt the busiest for the rescue since the start of Ireland’s economic downturn which saw the huge rise in the amount of unwanted, neglected and/or abandoned horses, ponies & donkeys all over the country.

Billy … discarded racehorse

The calls to all rescue groups who assist equines in need have yet to show signs of reducing.  Resources are stretched to limits none of us thought possible.  The frequency of adoption enquiries whereby holding steady are just not meeting the demand for spaces which is leaving rescues with no choice but to start exercising the word “No” more often than before.

"Ned of the Shed"
“Ned of the Shed”

On the 6th of June we discovered that a donkey stallion with overgrown hooves had been dumped here in the early hours of the morning … the people dumping stallions onto a property with mares, some of whom have foals at foot, really have no level of intelligence at all … it is an absolutely mindless act :/

In any event, as this is supposed to be a ‘happy’ post, on the 20th of June “Ned of the Shed” had his last trip out & about as a stallion … yes he went to visit the gang at Ballyhugh Veterinary Clinic and so just a few hours later he was back in our care having been transformed into a gelding   🙂

Okay I know for any males reading this post you are wondering how we can put the term “happy post” and “gelding” into the one sentence .. don’t worry that was not the “happy” bit of the story 😉

Colts in Need of TLC

These two 3yr old colts arrived into our care just as June 2013 was drawing to a close 🙁

ponylftrear5-7-13 ponyrgtrear5-7-13

Both had huge worm burdens which after dosing meant that this was all the bodyweight they actually had.

These ponies lived in a residential area on a main road on the edge of a Co Clare village ……

If you see or know of ponies, horses and/or donkeys in trouble PLEASE do not say to yourself “someone else will report them” … you are “someone” and if you care enough to notice them then you need to get help to them.

Tiny new equine arrival at BAR

Megan is a 9h-10h pony who arrived into our care along with a number of other small inbred ponies who were being neglected by their owner.

Megan is around 3yrs old and around 9-10h
Megan is around 3yrs old and around 9-10h

Upon arrival Megan was underweight, worm bound, had lice and rain scald. She is a nervous pony who has most likely never been handled properly in her 3yrs of life 🙁

In April we became suspicious that Megan, despite her physical condition upon arrival, was in foal and as the weeks went on we were left with no doubt that this was the case. On Father’s Day, the 16th of June, she produced what is undoubtedly the smallest ever equine to be in BAR’s care …
